Sound Triangulation and Ranging Come to Hearing Care
The ability to emphasize one voice, buried in the background of a busy restaurant, pub, party, or social gathering is and has been the Holy Grail of Hearing Care providers since I got into the industry over thirty years ago. Being able to hear the voice across the table in that noisy restaurant, or the punch line of the joke in that huddled up group at a party, have been real issues for those of us with even mild to moderate high frequency hearing loss for even longer.
The introduction of dual microphones in hearing aids several years back allowed for various strategies that focused more amplification in the front of the listener, while giving some real relief to those sounds and noises coming from the sides and rear. Lots of great equipment out on the market today uses similar strategies to try to emphasize the conversation in the front of the listener and some work amazingly well in some pretty complicated environments.
The more sophisticated systems even shifting and adapting automatically, between strategies and programs automatically while classifying and either amplifying, or attenuating up to a dozen, or more sound sources in an effort to reach that Holy Grail of hearing the voice we want in whatever environment we find ourselves.
A few short years ago the major manufacturers even began to piggyback ultra low drain, digital radio transceivers right onto their sound processing chips. This allows these systems to not only communicate between ears, but through a dongle, to communicate with any Bluetooth equipped device, such as your iPhone, Droid, Laptop etc.
By introducing binaural communication between ears, a whole new level of signal processing became possible. Not only can program and volume changes be coordinated between ears and the instruments switch more appropriately together, with the continued advancement in the speed and power of the base chips, real time triangulation and ranging of multiple sound sources becomes possible. This allows for the sound emphasis to not only be directed toward the front of the listener, but now, the system actually knows which sound sources are closest, not just the loudest.
The first major manufacturer to bring such advanced spatial processing to bear is Unitron Hearing, of Plymouth Minnesota, with the release last month of their Moxi Pro line. With this system, the voice of my date at the table right next to me is the one that just seems to float above even the noisiest of backgrounds making understanding in noise easier than ever before.
