Helping Brevard County Residents Thrive Despite Chronic Health Challenges

Ten years ago, Brevard County resident Christina Tecson survived breast cancer at age 39—a life-altering experience that reshaped her values and outlook. “After surviving cancer, I developed a greater appreciation for life and a new ideology,” she said. “It became the ultimate challenge to keep living out those renewed values.”

That shift in perspective is common among people facing serious illness, chronic health conditions, or trauma. But despite newfound purpose, navigating life after such challenges can be overwhelming. Feelings like grief, guilt, imposter syndrome, or burnout often linger beneath the surface. The desire to live fully and prioritize health can also be isolating. It takes more than resilience—it takes a community.

Live Inspired Brevard, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in early 2024, supports and empowers people in Brevard County affected by chronic health conditions. The organization serves a wide range of individuals who are often underserved or disadvantaged by their circumstances. Its mission centers on connection, education, and empowerment through five core types of social support: emotional, esteem, social network, informational, and tangible.

Programs include peer-led support groups, wellness activities, and access to a network of professionals who offer services such as physical therapy, creative expression, financial planning, and caregiving support. The nonprofit also collaborates with local experts and service providers to expand access to essential health and wellness resources.

Current offerings include two general cancer support groups, a breast cancer group, and a chronic illness and pain support group. Each group fosters a safe environment where people with similar experiences can share openly, feel understood, and build healthier coping strategies.

“When I was going through cancer as a young adult,” Tecson explained, “I appreciated the nonprofits that offered support where I was being treated. That inspired me to create something similar here in Brevard.” Now a licensed clinical social worker, Tecson says she sees firsthand how connection and education within peer groups improve mental health and overall wellbeing.

The nonprofit is rooted in social work principles, emphasizing strength, self-determination, and the healing power of community. “Within our support and wellness community, vulnerability is a strength, not a weakness,” Tecson says. Mental health counseling is available, billed through insurance or offered at a discounted self-pay rate.
