My coworker Kayli told me about the park/trail while we were at work a few Sundays ago, and she encouraged me to share it with you. I loved the enthusiasm Kayli expressed on how she enjoyed it some years ago. When my husband and I rode our bikes on the trail I remember hearing the zoo animals as we entered the trailhead. It was a steamy hot day as we stopped to read the various plaques along the way. Overhead in the canopy the various sights and sounds of urban living meld into the sounds of the wetlands as the trail wound through the trees.
I think an early evening walk would really be spectacular as the sun sets over the pond and marshland. It would be a treat to see the various colors paint the clouds as the wading birds fly overhead squeaking in the evening sky.
The area the trailhead is located on is the Atlantic Coastal Ridge. As you walk along you will see educational plaques that are placed on the sides of the trail along the way from the south end of the zoo’s parking lot to, the cul-de-sac at Turtle Mound Rd. The trail is raised for the first length with four-foot railings. Later the trail loses the railings as well as the raised walkway, still clearly marked, by pavement, the trail continues under through Pineda Causeway to its destination at the cul-de-sac.
Looking into the history of the trail I learned that the land was originally owned by the Duda family. As many will know, the Duda family owned 43,000 acers including the land the trail is on. Fun fact they also own land in Texas and California.
