A Calm in the Storm:
Gift for Educators – and Autism Community Thrift Store open Brevard County’s
First Free Community Sensory Room.

What Is a Sensory Room?

A sensory room is a specially designed environment that uses carefully chosen lighting, textures, sounds, and calming elements to help regulate the nervous system. Unlike a typical public space, every detail is intentional — chosen to soothe rather than overwhelm, to invite rather than exclude.

Who Is It For?

Our sensory room is open to everyone, free of charge. It is particularly beneficial for autistic individuals, children and adults with ADHD, people with sensory processing differences, anxiety, or trauma histories — or anyone who simply needs a moment of genuine calm. In a world that often feels too loud, too bright, and too fast, this space says: you can let go and relax – you belong here.

The Benefits
Time spent in a well-designed sensory environment has been shown to reduce anxiety, support emotional regulation, ease sensory overload, and improve focus and mood. For families navigating neurodiversity, it also offers something less clinical but equally powerful — the feeling of being welcomed without judgment. Since opening, every single piece of feedback we have received has been 100% positive.

Why We Built It
GiFT for Educators, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded by Dianne Zaccheo, MSW, LCSW — a licensed clinical social worker and family therapist with more than 30 years of experience in the field of neurodiversity. Having trained and worked closely alongside many families over the years, I understand firsthand what the real needs are and what is missing in our communities to truly support them.
Neurodivergent people deserve environments designed with them in mind — sensory-safe spaces that support rather than exclude. This room is that belief, made real.
