Can a Podcast Help Market Your Business?

Podcasts and podcasting are hot, and growing. According to the latest survey by Edison Research, 44% of people in the US have listened to a podcast. That’s 124 million people, and 12 million Americans listened to a podcast for the first time during the past year.

What is a Podcast?

If you’re new to podcasting, think of it as an Internet radio (and sometimes TV) show that can be listened to anytime.

How do You Listen to a Podcast?

Many cell phones come with a Podcast App pre-installed. If they don’t have one installed or if you don’t like the default app, there are other Apps you can install on your phone to download and listen to podcasts. You do not have to use an iPhone to listen to podcasts. Apps are available for iPhone and Android.

Note, most podcasts can also be listened to on your desktop computer and many have video and audio and can be viewed on YouTube.

Podcast fans have increased listening 40% over the last year.
Most listen to an average of 7 shows per week.

How can a podcast help my business?

As a business owner, there are many ways that a podcast can help your business. Don’t think of them as direct advertising, but think of them as a way to establish expertise as well as create awareness for your business.

Do I Have to Create My Own Podcast to Benefit?

Creating and maintaining a podcast requires a long-term commitment and a lot of work. Even a minimally produced podcast requires taping, uploading, tagging, and usually some editing. To get the most out of podcasting for your business, without having to create and run your own podcast, you can serve as a guest on other people’s podcasts and still benefit.

How to Be a Great Podcast Guest

Understand that a podcast is not a commercial. This is not your chance to sell the audience on your deal of the week as though it were a used car advertisement. It is a chance to provide information to show your expertise and perhaps tell a customer success story. Work with the podcast host to understand the show layout and what information will be relevant to the show’s audience.
